About Us

Well hello there! Welcome to Then we BRUNCH, a celebration — obviously — of the most wonderful of mealtimes. Here we firmly believe brunch is always a good idea, and no arguments will be entered into on this subject.

As such, we are fans of inappropriately late breakfasts and indulgently long lunches; of two meals a day, often supplemented by a mid-morning treat and an afternoon appertivo; and of exploring foreign cities via little other than a meandering path of cafes and patisseries.

Then We Brunch - About Us

So who are we and how did we arrive here? We’re JJ and RJ (or Jen and Rob if you’re sitting across from us at a table). JJ is a photographer, stylist and recipe developer, RJ is a man of mystery and a reluctant instagram figure, we are both reasonably obsessed by good food.

As for where it all started? 15+ years ago on St Paddy’s Day in Sydney, Australia… The details are a bit hazy, as most good St Paddy’s Day celebrations tend to be, but within a few short weeks we were already planning our first around the world adventure. Several laps around the sun later — a fair number of accumulated frequent flyer miles, a move to New York, a move back to Sydney, and seemingly endless wanderlust — a good friend christened us gypsies.

These days both our weekends at home and every day of adventures away tend to be fueled almost exclusively by “where and what should we eat next?”, and regular checks of how many steps we’ve done that day to walk a bit of it off!

The recipes found here are often inspired by brunch dishes from around the world — by cafes we’ve tried or want to try, by meals we only had once but still reminisce about years later, and by favourites we’ll order again and again. You may stumble across entertaining ideas and interiors that make us smile, and travel journals that focus considerably more on where to eat than what old stuff to see. We’re not short on opinions and will often share spots we’ve discovered but this is not a review site — there’s too much good food in this world to bother talking about things we don’t like.

Tasting notes

  • Tea for her (with an occasional coffee but only in Italy or NYC); hot chocolate for him, with an occasional tea
  • Veggies + fish for her; veggies + fish + meat for him
  • Chocolate for her almost always, then lemon; caramel for him
  • Yoga then running for her; running for him
  • Ordering two different dishes and sharing means we can try more things, we like trying more things
  • Florence, June 2017, played witness to a seven gelato scoop day — it’s only 3½ scoops each though, so totally ok, right? (The March 2016 five doughnut day in Tokyo however… that one probably warranted an intervention.)
